About Us

Our Mission

The mission of the Washburn-Norlands Living History Center is to relate the values and accomplishments of Maine’s Civil War era Washburn family to modern-day Americans.

This mission has three goals:

To restore and maintain the historic buildings and grounds at the Washburn Homestead (Norlands);

To preserve and utilize the Norlands collections, including the Washburn family archives, for educational and research purposes;

To inform the public at large through outreach activities

To carry out this mission, the following objectives are defined:

To use participatory “living history” techniques to increase appreciation of the conditions and blues of rural New England in which the Washburns lived;

To use the resources of the Norlands’ property to recreate a sense of the environment, the activities, the community, and the personal relationships of an American family farm;

To instill an appreciation of local, state and national culture and history through programs highlighting the accomplishments and conditions of the Washburn family;

To establish, maintain, and extend a pattern of broad-based support and participation among individuals and organizations in the community and beyond;

To continue to operate in a stable financial manner as a non-profit organization according to Federal guidelines.
