History of The Washburn-Norlands

Living History Center

The Washburn-Norlands Living History Center is a non-profit living museum, dedicated to the preservation of 18th and 19th century rural Maine heritage.

The Washburn-Norlands Foundation was formed in 1973, at the bequest of the Washburn Family descendants.  It was then converted into a living history museum with the intent of preserving the estate and the amazing stories of its past.

Today the organization is run by the Board of Trustees, who together ensure the protection of the estate, its collections and their future.

The Washburn-Norlands estate is occupied by four historic buildings, the Mansion, Library, Meeting House and School House.  Each building has been restored and preserved operating as a museum.  This museum is home to a vast number of collections; including artwork, original Washburn artifacts, historic clothing, books, furniture and much more.  You can view a detailed description of our collections by visiting our collections page.  It will give you an introduction to our museum, but nothing compares with actually visiting.
